A few weeks ago, out of the blue, Kortnee sent me an email about the possibility of taking some family portraits. As we talked, we discovered similarities in our backgrounds; her husband is a Navy pilot on the same aircraft as I am, we both have young children, and we both posses a creative spirit. Mine, obviously is photography, while hers is a fantastic aptitude for calligraphy and artwork. It was this aspect of her that I most observed as the common thread throughout her beautiful family.
Kortnee and Kyle’s family were my dream photography couple. Kortnee picked out complimentary colors, let me pick where the best light would be, and rolled with the fact that I was shooting with an 8 month old hanging on my back while my wife stood in knee high water to get some of the day’s most spectacular shots. But aside from the flexibility and aesthetic appeal, there was an intangible element. The entire family was so happy! Little Fulton scampered about through tiny waves and amongst the large rocks, Kyle was a great sport about me giving posing tips and even kept smiling for a crucial shot when Fulton drew blood from his nose accidentally. The entire shoot flew by in a blur of smiles and bursts of laughter, it was as if the evening was one of Kortnee’s drawings, flowing beautifully from letter to letter and upon taking a step back after….a gorgeous portrait.
